Meet the Baker
Fred and Amy Moreau are the owners of Moreau’s Bäckerei, a small bakery with a dining area to relax with a pastry and coffee while utilizing the free Wi-Fi. While Fred is the head baker, Amy manages and oversees the sales and marketing operations of the bakery. In addition we offer a small lunch menu with Amy’s crustless quiche and Fred’s Flammkuchen (German Pizza) as the standard fare, with soups and sandwiches occasionally added to the lunch menu.
Over the past 35 years, when not serving in or with the military, Fred has worked at different types of restaurants across the country. His love of baking was inherited from his mom’s side of the family and the occasional opportunity to work in kitchens and learn from others. Many of the cookies and pastries that Fred and Amy have presented at cookie tastings, and showcase in their store, are recipes from countries of Europe that were handed down through his family.
Moreau’s Backerei is located off Highway 34 between Glenwood and Red Oak in downtown Malvern, Iowa. After renovating an old building downdown, we have opened our doors to bring Malvern and the Mills County area delicious baked goods for all to enjoy. The “Bäckerei”, translated from German, meaning Bakery, is a culmination of a dream that Fred had for bringing cookies and pastries that his mother and family generations past have baked for years. Amy’s dream of having a coffee shop fit perfectly with the plans that Fred had of a bakery and so they joined forces. The love of baking and creating led initially to opening Fred’s Cookie Jar Bakery but soon the name was changed to Moreau’s Bäckerei since their variety of old world recipes encompassed more than just drop cookies. “Amy and I look forward to serving your needs and providing you with delicious baked goods! A future venture in the growth of the business is to get Amy’s Coffee and Smoothie shop up and running so both dreams can be fulfilled and you can enjoy more fresh products.”
